37 provincial consumer associations recently issued a consumption warning: non-national standard sockets are unsafe. When purchasing sockets, consumers should not choose unsafe universal sockets and two-core sockets. Reporters visited the market and learned that currently, major supermarkets in Dongguan basically do not have these two dangerous sockets. However, they are still sold in some small hardware stores, and some households are still using them.
However, in some small hardware stores, universal sockets are still prominently displayed for sale. In a hardware store next to a building on Sihuan Road, the reporter saw several different sizes of universal sockets. Taking a universal socket priced at over 20 yuan as an example, it can plug in three plugs, all of which are three-hole. Its price is cheaper than the new national standard five-hole socket.
The reporter inquired about its safety issues from the store owner as a consumer. The store owner responded that three-hole sockets do not have obvious dangers. “As long as you don’t use several plugs at the same time, it’s generally fine. If you find the connection wire becoming soft, stop using it.”
Relevant departments remind consumers to replace universal sockets and two-core sockets at home as soon as possible. When purchasing power sockets, choose through formal channels, do not choose brands that have been repeatedly exposed, check that the packaging of the socket has complete manufacturer and product information, and check the socket quality by weighing, repeatedly pressing the switch, testing plugging and unplugging force, and pulling the power cord.
Some citizens are unaware of the dangers of non-national standard sockets
Recently, 38 consumer rights protection units jointly conducted a "Power Socket Safety Usage Survey" on websites such as China Consumer Network, Sina Finance, and 3G Portal. The results showed that 72.69% of respondents did not know that the state has explicitly banned the production of universal sockets, and 64.7% of respondents did not know that two-core sockets seriously violate national standards and can cause accidents such as electric shocks and fires. At the same time, consumer associations across various regions issued warnings that non-national standard sockets are unsafe, and universal sockets have long been phased out.
Hardware stores still selling universal sockets
The reporter visited some supermarkets in Dongguan yesterday and found it difficult to find universal sockets. In a large chain supermarket in Xiping, the reporter saw that all sockets on the shelves were new national standard five-hole sockets, and there were no two-core ones. Their prices are also relatively more expensive than previous universal sockets, basically not less than 30 yuan, with some as high as seventy or eighty yuan.
It is reported that universal sockets, where the socket holes are compatible with both two-pole and three-pole plugs, have larger socket holes. The contact area between the socket contact piece and the electrical plug is too small, which can easily cause the contact piece to overheat and lead to fire accidents. In addition, when using two-core sockets, once an internal insulation component of the appliance is damaged, it can easily cause electric shock accidents. The new national standard requires the production of sockets in a separate combination form of two-pole and three-pole socket holes (commonly known as new five-hole sockets). This type of socket has a larger contact area between the plug and the socket, making contact tighter and reducing the risk of electric shock.
The reporter randomly interviewed seven citizens. Six were very clear that two-core sockets should not be purchased, but five did not know about the flaws of universal sockets. Mr. Li has a socket purchased four years ago at home. Although the plug is three-core, there are only three socket holes. However, he has been using it all along. After learning that this type of socket has long been phased out, he understood the hazards of universal sockets and decided to replace it immediately.
